"All Gnar Tapes are guaranteed rad. That means you feel great when that package arrives, because everyone loves getting packages. If you request things like a drawing or a letter, we'll include that too. We'd love to have a relationship with you. It's a give and take thing; we keep making the sickest tapes by new and exciting bands and artists, while you continue to pay us to get your hands on them. Then, as the big wheel turns, we'll keep making more. Thanks for your trust! GNAR TAPES IS FUN!"
OMFG! The one and only "godfather of home-recorded pop music"
has up and hopped aboard the Gnar gravy train! Recorded while still in
high school alongside a crew of other dirty minded youngsters, Grease
is an insight into the beginnings of a legend. While RSM's profile has
gone way up in recent years thanks to longtime fan and collaborator
Ariel Pink, the man has been an underground hero to many, far and wide,
for over 30 years. All it takes is a little google search and you'll
see; the man was, is, and always will be an innovator and a visionary.
It is such an honor and a joy for us to be able to reissue this lost
gem; a long player full of 60s teen jams, field recordings, and juvenile
humor in the key of R Stevie Moore. A tome of history and a "gotta-get"
for any fan of RSM; a blast from the past collector's item just in time
for Summer.
Gnar Tapes is stoked to introduce you to one of Portland, OR's coolest and weirdest bands. Standing in the cool shadows, surrounded by smoke, wearing fur coats and magic crystals are the three boys responsible for the sleek, sultry and sexy sounds found within the plastic and tape of this cassette. This album traverses some crazy territory; a strange brew of Zeppelin rock and Prince / T. Rex glam sleaze. Or what if Jane's Addiction and CCR got together? Falsettos and twang, for real. Recorded in huge sound by the band themselves, Black Gold FEELS like a real album. And it feels good. Equal parts gnew glam and classic rock, the Spiders are doing their own thing in a town full of no one like them. Catch them on their US tour RIGHT NOW!
Gnar's favorite gazers return with a special limited edition cassingle to go along with their breathtaking new LP on Kanine. Featuring album single "Four Hours (Away)" and cassingle-only track "When I'm With You", this little collector's gem showcases another side of the Prisms lush spectrum of sound. So incredibly chill and beautiful, these two love songs carry you on a blanketed pillow of sleepy dream warmth. Still fuzzy, still hazy, still gorgeous. Young Prisms are one of the essential groups out there right now making sounds like this; if you love them as much as we do then you'll want to grab this tape before it completely vanishes.
Skrill Meadow aka Olympia, WA resident Markly Morrison is one of the gnewest and most valuable players on the Gnar team. Former purveyor of (the now RIP) Brown Interior Music, a current member of K Records soft pop stars LAKE and Night-People associated jammers Lazer Zeppelin, Markly's Skrill Meadow project combines a candyshop variety of analog dance, pop, chill, weird, and awesome feelings and sounds. With contributions by many of Olympia's finest and featuring Markly's absolutely spot-on production work, Hard Water is one of those tapes you're gonna take with you places. Perfect for BBQs, dance parties, river trips, cleaning the house, long drives, making love, etc. This tape is for anyone with even the slightest appreciation for fun and stoney analog pop. Peep his contribution to last year's Gnar comp.
Though actually the first album as Free Weed, Gnar captain Erik Gage's second release following his debut EP "Beer On The Drugs" on Midwest buddy label Beer On The Rug serves mostly as a collection of demos. Featuring web-favorites "Stuck On Stupid" and "I Wanna Do Drugs Again", these songs were recorded at the now-RIP Gnar apartment on Belmont on a Singalodeon karaoke machine. This is not a rich man's music tape. It does sound very comfy in its cassette home though. Pack a bowl and do yourself a flavor.
(Tracks: Free Weed, Couch Lock, Stuck On Stupid, Rock On, I Wanna Do Drugs (Again), Demon Night, Blown Speakers, I Hate Anything, This Is My Song, Happy People Living Here, Hi-Zak, Chill 'Em All, Life Is Weird, Indian Music)
Gnar's own baby boys have had this album up online for awhile now so it's only right that they have a tape to show for it. Super limited edition, hand dubbed by the band, the Gnar version features cassette-only track "Jammer", a ballad about the mother van on the road of man with the moon cryin' and the sun asleep. In preparation for their second giant-ass tour of the US and the official vinyl release of Positive Feedback on the inimitable Marriage Records in June. Check out the videos from the album so far - "If I Had A Van", "4 Track Mind", and "Chill Yourself". Also peep their video for their song from the Gnarcotics Unanimous Gnar Tapes compilation that came out last Fall! - "Shit Happens". Long live the Fang!!!!!
(Tracks: 4 Track Mind, I Can't Skate, Unchain Your Brain, Alien, Song For Aleco, No Sweat, Band From Macy's, Sucks To Be You, Spaced Out, If I Had A Van, Chill Yourself, Kill Your TV, It's On The Table, Drugs On The Moon, Jammer (Bonus Track))
Wandering wonder Adrian Orange (aka Thanksgiving) returns from the fog with four new songs recorded in his hometown of Portland, OR. With the help of Jimmy Leslie of White Fang, he recorded this handful of sparkling gems on a repaired tape machine later last year. A re-awakening of old feelings and happy memories, the tape begins with a particularly joyous (and haunting) rendition of Arthur Russell's "Close My Eyes" that 'old-school' fans of his will be stoked on. This is followed by a hushed and intimate strummer that turns into a quiet, pretty synth interlude. The other side begins with a wicked cover of mid-70s Zam-rock band Witch's lost classic "Strange Dream" featuring Jimmy Fang's stoney drum work. The tape ends with the only instrumental track, a desert nomad blues guitar walk that leads you out of the dream, ready to dream again.
(Tracks: Close My Eyes, I'd Give You Everything I Got And You'd Say It's Not Enough, Strange Dream, Song)
The sequel to last year's smash success 'Rub Rub Relief'
is an instant classic. A rising star full of hot gas, Unkle Funkle
has been quickly gaining popularity for his ultra-crisp, intelligent
and humorous take on Top 40 radio and Pop Music at large. Recorded
entirely by the man himself, "Picture of My Dick" takes the listener
on a very personally guided tour of pop music history. From 80s
frat-rock to helium-pitch R&B to radio-ready pop rock to gay
country, the Funkle expands the depth and production of his
classically trained compositions to an all-time sublime. The imitation
commercials and radio segues go deeper and weirder. This one pops
harder than anyone could have expected. Watch out for LP on the
esteemed Marriage Records later this year. Get this one quick, it's going fast!
(WARNING: The artist's actual (male) genitalia is proudly adorned on the album cover.)
(Tracks: A: Bad in a Good Way, Jack and Jill, Have You Ever Felt a
Pain That You Couldn't Explain?, Rollin' (w/ commercial), OPP
(commercial), Made a Mistake, Picture of My Dick, Baby to Lean On (w/
commercial); B: What Would You Do?, The Balls (commercial), I Wouldn't
Expect You to Understand, Really (commercial), I Don't Wanna Be in Love
with You, I Can't Sk8)

These four lads have quickly gained the attention and admiration of
Portland's punk population for their 70s style guitar pop informed by
UK punk pioneers like Buzzcocks and The Clash. Youthbitch's beer
drenched anthems for drunk punks and fun-loving rascals have captured
the hearts of fans young and old for their bubblegummy melodies and
Exploding Hearts-style power-pop grandeur. Lifestyle lyrics about
summer nights partying and less than loveable girlfriends stay true to
the switchblade & leather romanticism that makes music like this
so fun and appealing. Definitely a band to look out for this year,
especially if you're into bands of the Burger and Dirtnap Records
variety. Debut LP later this year, with plenty of shows and tours to
catch. The fifth Youthbitch is YOU!
(Tracks: A: Richie Rich, My Girlfriend ('s a Whore), El Principe,
Summer of the Iceman, Sick All Over; B: Can't Help It, Punk Show, Cool
California, Cross My Heart)
Timmy's long awaited sophomore album is epically huge and
ultimately mind-melting. Medieval ambiance, mutant noise rock, alien
basement dub, psychic drum freakouts and apocalyptic poetry await you
as you take the midnight ride with Timmy. In it's staggering 81
minutes, the new album by this motley band of weirdos and militants
offers a truly escapist experience; a cry for a new world without
oppressive influences like Taco Bell and a call for trolls,
leprechauns, elephants, dragons, demons and dinosaurs to rise as one
and tear down the system. The savage expressions unleashed in this
dense work are the screams of free birds turned to bats, the sound of
animals in the matrix. So take the ride, there's room in dad's van to
party.
(Tracks: A: Timmy's Constant Capitalist Revolutions, Is There
Room In Your Dad's Van to Party?, Dinosaurs Shit Cheesy Fiesta Potatoes,
Timmy's Holiday Parade in the Sun, A Thousand Civil Wars, KILL UR
BOSS, 80 Foot Victorian Elephants Smashing Aliens, Midnight Ride Along
With Timmy, Sad Sounds on the Beach, God's Thousands of Lounges; B:
DETOX THE ACID DRAGON, Leprechaun Vs. Troll (Shake Your Chains),
Beautiful Sea Lions)
Fuck yeah! Stockton, CA's own Bad Daddies thought it would be a cool idea to ask the Fang to make a split. What a cool idea it turned out to be! White Fang's side features audience favorite "Chairman Of The Bored" and a cover of Free Weed's "I Hate Anything". Bad Daddies side features four punk bursts about the woes of renter's fees, mean fuckers, not wanting to die, etc. A great split on fucking translucent purple vinyl! Get one before they gone yo.
Gnar Tapes' founding fathers' 3rd album solidifies their role as the belt-wearing champions of stoned shredding. Featuring future-classic fan favorites "Not Listening", "Feeling Shitty" and the title track, this is the office-wide memo for Gnar rockers everywhere. Comes with a huge poster of the band and a digital download for your computer-world. A fun record for beers and bongs with friends.
